I think this is an instance in which the sane people who clicked on this title and us degenerates could unite and say it out loud together: But why? Good question, but I do not have an answer. Let's finish it here. That's the post. Goodbye!

I think the title is already confusing to some, and it is my duty to clear things up before we continue: It's an old video in which the precision of a medical robot is showcased by peeling a grape. Of course, the internet being the internet, it did not take long before this operation was taken out of context and turned into a meme. At some stage it was all over the internet. Everyone talked about how they made surgery on a grape.

So, cool! They made surgery on a grape! That's ridiculous, sure, but I cannot let it go before a full psychological analysis of the matter at hand. Some memes age like wine; the older and forgotten it gets, the funnier it is, right? Right?!

Maybe sometimes we take things too seriously. I understand, life isn't particularly happy or peaceful as a whole. There is the constant stress of keeping a stomach full and a mind empty is challenging. Therefore we always tend to find ways to optimize things, find a cheaper way, improve ourselves, and so on. We don't get to appreciate the simpler and unnecessary parts of like, simply because we don't have the time.

That, or we are afraid. We cover the fear by coming up with excuses:

Is it really necessary?
Do you really have to do that?
What will you achieve by that?
Wouldn't X be a better use of your time?

As you are reading this blog, I have a feeling we have the same stance on unnecessary and stupid challenges.

I want to quote Wikipedia: George Herbert Leigh Mallory was an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s. (...) He took part in a second expedition to make the first ascent of the world's highest mountain, in which his team achieved a record altitude of 8,225 m without supplemental oxygen. Once asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Everest, Mallory famously replied, "Because it's there."

Simple, but effective. It is often that I remind myself of this quote every time I see a challenging task ahead. Even this, Consider.. Writing the blog posts, coding the website, making a backend, doing some basic art, constantly trying to come up with ideas for posts and interactivity... When I first looked at it, that seemed like a mammoth task. Was it ever going to bring fame or money for me? No. Then why did I do it? Because I could, and I wanted to.

Impressive how such a small statement can bring an entirely new perspective to life. They could have said "Because I wanted to" but it would not be half as striking as this quote. It is a call for everyone to start that task you have been putting off for a while. You know you want to do it. There may be people trying to bring you down and change your mind on it. Don't listen to them. The challenge is right there; worst that can happen is that you walk back home, then stare at that mountain until you feel ready again.

So yes, grapes. If your heart desires to go and perform a medical operation on a famously small fruit, go ahead! The challenge is awaiting and it won't be completed by people who say I wish I had done that.

What I'm saying is: It has nothing to do with the grapes, or the medical operation, or the doctors, or the medical robot... It's about sending a message. A message to the world that dreamers can go big and change the world. As pointless it may seem, for all we know no one had done surgery on a grape before. They did it. And now everybody knows of them. Their legacy will live on as those who did surgery on a grape.

And now, whatever you have been holding off, that's time for it. Your turn. Now go and do surgery on that grape. Time is ticking.
